From the effects of international sanctions to the growing influence of new global actors, the region’s political and economic trajectory is increasingly intertwined with broader developments in the international system.

What does United States sanctions policy mean for Venezuela, and how does it affect the wider region? Has China’s expanding economic presence strengthened Latin America’s strategic autonomy, or has it created new forms of dependency? And more broadly, how is Latin America positioning itself within an increasingly multipolar world?

Join us for a panel discussion exploring political developments, global trade dynamics, and Latin America’s evolving role in international politics.

The event will feature contributions from Jemima García-Godos, researcher at the Norwegian Centre for Human Rights whose work focuses on human rights and transitional justice in Latin America , and Vegard Bye, Senior Partner at Scanteam and a long-time expert on democracy, development, and human rights in Latin America with experience from both the United Nations and Norwegian foreign policy circles .

The evening will include short presentations followed by a moderated discussion examining how regional political developments, international economic relations, and global power shifts are shaping Latin America’s future. The discussion will conclude with an open Q&A session, allowing participants to engage directly with the speakers.
